    Welcome to

      Cheriton Bowls Club

We are situated in Folkestone Kent in the heart of the Garden of England just one mile from the Famous English Channel and just a few minutes from the shopping in Cheriton and a short bus ride from the town centre.

We are a hospitable group of Bowlers that meet in a welcoming clubhouse. We have our own bar, 6-rink green and also a car park,  all in a peaceful setting overlooked by the North Downs.

Our season starts in April 2007 and ends when winter approaches at the end of September when many of us dive down to the indoor club. Bowlers of all levels are very welcome to join us as members or just for a roll-up (green fees apply).

If you are not yet a bowler then we can teach you the game too, we not only have one but TWO Senior Coaches, Maurice and Dick. So advanced coaching, with video is also available upon request.

Although the friendly fixtures are just that. A friendly match between members of our club and we also have matches with other clubs. Whilst these never get to be fiercely fought matches with everything at stake they are played to win. The most important part of these friendly matches is that we enjoy them. The result is often forgotten by the time we get to the bar afterwards.

Members are encouraged to put their names down for matches. The sheets are found outside the respective changing rooms. Selection is carried out weekly and the teams are displayed on the board in the bar window.

Membership

When I first joined Cheriton  I was amazed at the welcome of the members. After just a couple of weeks at Cheriton I felt that I had been a member for years, as you walk into the club everyone, is very friendly. The Captain makes sure you are made welcome and that you fit in.

Membership is open to anyone, irrespective of gender, race or creed. Our youngest member is 11 years old (and a prospective national player) the eldest is 'over 21'! (or is that 81?)

Membership costs just £60 for a year and there are no rink fees on top of that. Junior membership is £10 and Social Membership is just £5.

Juniors

Junior

Bowlers at

Cheriton

are welcome

We also have a junior section at Cheriton. This junior section  is linked to the English Bowls Youth Development Scheme (EBYDS), their badge is shown on the right.

There are only a few juniors but we encourage all youngsters to have a go. Age is no barrier and providing they can hold the smallest bowl we welcome them.

We meet on a Saturday morning at 10am at the clubhouse and have a game and maybe some practice. We have qualified, adult instructors and also a strong child protection scheme in force

League

Both the Men and the Ladies take part in the Shepway League, the men play on a Monday evening whilst the ladies play on a Wednesday evening. The men play three triples at home and another away. The Ladies play two triples both home and away.

What's On??

We have regular events at the club during the summer and special Saturday get-togethers during the winter too. Our resident Chefs  provide us with fantastic meals at silly prices (usually less than £2.00)

Our Friday evening roll-up starts at 6pm and gets almost all members out on the green to play before going back into the club house for a welcome drink from the bar and the meal. Bar prices are better than the pub with a typical pint of beer at £2.00 a pint

And a semi organise roll-up every Tuesday & Wednesday !

Learn the Game!

The game of Bowls is quite easy to master. At Cheriton we are lucky in that two members are Senior Coaches, Maurice Worsley and Dick Pascoe.

We have in recent times taught a registered blind person to bowl,  someone who had suffered a stroke and also a person in a wheelchair. If we can manage to get these to successfully take up the game we can help you.

As mentioned the game is simple, you stand on a mat, throw a white ball called a jack down the grass and than try to get a much larger bowl to stop as close to it as possible.

Then things go wrong because all sorts of rules are brought into play.

It usually takes three or four sessions of a couple of hours to get 'Joe or Joan Average' bowling to an acceptable level. We have to be careful as the grass is easily damaged by incorrectly delivered bowls.

For those that have been bowling for some time we offer advanced coaching. Tennis players, golfers and football players all have coaches to help them on a regular basis. Most bowlers think that having learnt the game makes them experts.

Coaching is a skill learnt over several years. It covers all aspects of the game from the actual delivery of the bowl to the skill of reading a head. We use modern technology including Video Cameras to get you bowling correctly and to use your skill to best advantage.

If you would like to learn the game or take advantage of advanced coaching contact our Club Coach Maurice Worsley on Folkestone 277241 or Dick Pascoe on 894390.
